Environmental programme looking at maritime archaeology in Northern Ireland and a quest to uncover history concealed underwater.
Storms have brought many ships to their tragic end on the rocky shores of Ulster. Dundrum Bay, also dubbed a ‘ships' graveyard’, is where a fleet of Viking warships perished to the storm twelve hundred years ago. Yet there is very little evidence of the Viking period. Introduced and narrated by Brian Black, this programme looks at the story of Ulster maritime heritage and a quest for evidence and better understanding of Ulster’s sunken past. Brian Williams, an archaeologist specializing in maritime archaeology, explains more about his work and ongoing archaeological research along the coast of Dundrum Bay, Nendrum Monastic Site and Dunsy Island.
In the second part of the programme Brian Black joins an exciting underwater research project exploring the bottom of Belfast Lough to locate and explore shipwrecks.
