Description

In mid-20th-century Ireland, showbands were at the heart of youth culture. These bands, with a repertoire of popular hits, traditional songs, and standards, travelled across the country, bringing music and excitement to both rural communities and towns. For young people in isolated areas, showband performances provided a much-loved escape and a rare social opportunity. Many musicians went on to become household names, including figures like Philomena Begley.

In this video, Declan Forde presents highlights from the Music Heritage Exhibition held at Strule Arts Centre in Omagh in 2023. The exhibition showcases the history of the showbands that performed in the town, with Declan giving an overview of notable bands, key figures, and various memorabilia on display – from information boards to costumes and keepsakes.
