Description

The opening of Parliament with full state honours featuring guards of honour and a 21-gun salute. Many distinguished guests attended including Prime Minister Brookeborough and the Lord Mayor of Belfast. A police escort brought His Excellency Lord Wakehurst, Governor of Northern Ireland, to Parliament Buildings whereupon he inspected the troops. 

The footage also shows some interior shots of Stormont. 

Notes

Northern Ireland Parliament came into being after partition in 1922 and stayed in place until direct rule from Westminster began in 1972. It comprised of a House of Commons and a Senate and the Sovereign of the United Kingdom was represented by the Governor. 

Lord Brookeborough (Basil Brooke) was Prime Minister of Northern Ireland 1943-1963

His Excellency The Lord Wakehurst, John de Vere Loder, 2nd Baron Wakehurst, was Governor of Northern Ireland 1952-1964.
