Description

Film of the unveiling of a statue in Dungannon by Lord Mountbatten in April 1960. The statue was of Brigadier General John Nicholson who had attended Dungannon Royal School from the age of twelve before heading to India, where he found his fame during the days of empire. The statue had originally stood for more than fifty years outside the gates of Delhi, where Nicholson had been mortally wounded while retaking the city during the Indian Mutiny in 1857. Following Indian independence in the Twentieth Century, statues with connections to the imperial past became contentious. Therefore, Nicholson’s statue was moved to Northern Ireland to take up position in the grounds of his old school where Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, performed the duties.
