Description

Marie O'Neill recounts her efforts to film the Big Flood in Omagh in 1967 with contributions from Dr Haldene Mitchell and footage of bursting rivers and flooded streets from around the town. This clip appeared in Series 2, Programme 2 of Super 8 Stories.

Notes

Margaret O’Neill was working as a librarian at the time she filmed the images of the Omagh Flood in 1967. “I had always had an interest in photography from an early age. Friends who had a movie camera influenced me with colour films and recording family and friends actually moving and in many different surroundings and places. I had a Bell & Howell autoset camera and used a Eumig P8 ‘M’ Imperial Projector to view my films”. Margaret was a member of the Omagh Camera Club and enjoyed watching her movies in the presence of friends and family – “we had holiday films and then home movies parties at Christmas etc”. Margaret gave up her hobby during the 1980s when film began to be replaced by video. “I have not taken cine films for a long while – years. When I retired from work I was presented with a video recorder so since 1989 have mostly bought videos or recorded from TV anything of interest, but memories are always stirred when watching family films, holiday shots or travels as well as weddings”. She remains realistic about the prospect of her films being handed down through the generations saying, “After my demise I doubt if any family cousins will show an interest”, and so was only too happy to contribute her film to the Digital Film Archive for posterity
