Description

Teatime with Tommy was one of the most popular locally made programmes on the fledgling Ulster Television in the early 1960s. Its host, Tommy James, would sing songs in the studio which viewers had requested with regular musical guests accompanying him. Although very little survives of the series, some of the filmed location reports which were shot to be dropped into the nightly programmes still exist. In these, Tommy would often go out and visit factory workers, interviewing them in their place of work to find out what they did and what requests they had. This report comes from the famous Gallaher’s cigarette factory in Belfast and is a fascinating insight to the work of its staff as well as their musical tastes.
