Fantastic footage of the nightlife of Belfast teenagers from 1964. As teenage culture began to form into its own distinct entity in the early 1960s, new crazes, fashions, music and even venues began to emerge. Shown in this footage is something of the trend for “milk bars” at the time with non-alcoholic drinks available for the teen attendees, including that wholesome dairy product itself.
As well as the socialising over soft drinks, the fashionable teens are shown grooving to the latest beats on the dancefloor and there are some great shots of the signs outside the Plaza dancehall in Belfast.
This is Part 2 of a collection of offcuts from the piece Popscene ’64, which can also be found within the Digital Film Archive.
