Description

This episode of McGilloway's Way highlights the best of Ulster, focusing on the North West and Donegal. Oliver McGilloway journeys through bogland and glens visiting locals who are more than eager to discuss their beloved landscape and everything it entails.

Take a tour of Donegal visiting local fishermen who speaclise in oyster and seaweed farming. Flora and wildlife thrive throughout the rugged landscape of Glencolumbkille/Glencolmcille where the locals value traditions which have been passed down through the generations. Oliver discovers the areas links to traditional Irish music, the old ways of agriculture such as turf cutting and the lost art of currach boat building.

Admire the rich selection of wildlife and flora throughout the area including species such as the birds foot trefoil. The people are as rich in stories as the landscape, so take some time to hear ancient tales and learn some Irish, you'll be saying, 'Failte!' in no time.

McGilloway's Way stands as a precursor to Lesser Spotted Ulster with Joe Mahon.

Notes

Oliver, or Olly McGilloway as he was widely known as, was the presenter of McGilloway's Way and was produced by Joe Mahon.  The series was unexpectedly cut short due to McGilloway's untimely death in 1994. The programme was relaunched as Lesser Spotted Ulster with Joe Mahon as presenter and continues to be broadcast today.
