This film contains the rushes of a documentary on the Carrick Hill area of Belfast and is presented here in full. The finished programme the scenes were filmed for is now missing and these surviving fragments are of huge socio-historical importance. This area, along with many others in the inner city of Belfast at the time, was deemed to be slum housing and due to be cleared. The film therefore represents an important snapshot in moving images of an area that was completely eradicated and rebuilt shortly after.

The presenter in front of the camera is Patrick Riddell who was a journalist for the Sunday World. It is obvious that he isn’t entirely comfortable in presenting, standing awkwardly and waving the microphone around continually. However, we can assume that this was a passion project for the journalist and these pieces of the documentary which remain are an incredible record of a Belfast which was soon gone.
