Description

Ulster Television presented an ambitious seven part series in 1968 on the history of the Crusades. Presented by an expert on the middle east, Brigadier Ronald Broadhurst, this series not only told the story of the savage medieval wars between Christianity and Islam for mastery of the region, but appears to have brought the story up to date with what were then the most recent conflicts between Israel and the Arab nations.

Sadly, almost nothing of this series has survived in the archives. However, like many series of the time, it was a mixture of studio-based material and inserts on film. It is these film-based inserts of paintings and sculpture related to the Crusades and photographs of locations which have survived. Without sound, they cannot possibly do justice to the production, but we include them here as a record of what was, at the time, a landmark local TV series.
