The restless mind is a strange land. Emily-Niamh Mullan’s The Dreamer’s Sprint draws the viewer into the dreamscape of its protagonist. Zuzana Pabian plays the Dreamer, caught in a shifting maze between sleep and waking. Haunted by a veiled figure – played by the film’s writer and director, Emily Mullan – and by visions of a blindfolded woman and black roses, the Dreamer moves through a world that feels both familiar and unsettling. Who are these unknown figures? Could they be linked to the vandalised picture the Dreamer sees upon waking? With echoes of Maya Deren and Luis Buñuel, The Dreamer’s Sprint is a compelling study of the subconscious, suggesting that even in sleep, memory and pain find their way through.
