Description

Film by Archie Reid, showing 12th of July in the 1960s.

See children preparing items for bonfire, graffiti saying 'no Pope here' and 'Down the IRA'. The streets are decorated for the occasion. The viewer sees Clifton Street Orange Hall and the statue of Hugh Hanna, before it was blown up in 1970 by the IRA.

Water provided to the marchers by the Irish Temperance League.

Video ends showing the flames of the bonfires.

Notes

Clifton Street Orange Hall was opened in 1885.

Hugh Hanna was a Presbyterian minister, who was infamous for his anti-Catholicism. 

Archie Reid was a History teacher and prolific film maker, you can find several of his gems on the Britain on Film map. This material is courtesy of Elizabeth Reid.
