Description

This episode explores the people who make, play and listen to the pipes in Belfast.

The public are asked, "what do you think of traditional music?" and we hear various responses. Tom Clarke, a musician, then chats about the development of the pipes, first as a war instrument and then its evolution to the uilleann pipes, to meet the demands of Irish dancing.

Archive footage from 1975 of Robbie Hughs, a pipe maker, explains the process of making the instrument and the various disciplines around it. Clarke, discusses how in the 1970s a group of pipers came together with the purpose of creating a resurgence in popularity of the pipes. This was achieved as can be seen in the recent uses of the uilleann popes in jazz, modern art and rock music.

Concluding the programme are two pipers, playing on a bench outside the Botanical Gardens in Belfast.
