Description

This is excellent footage of firefighters at work in Belfast City Centre which nevertheless makes for rather depressing viewing. Taken at the scene of the North Street Arcade fire on 17 April 2004 we see fire crews desperately trying to contain the fire which would go onto devastate the arcade. Built in the 1930s, the art deco structure was of great importance to the city's architectural history and was much beloved by the arts community and youth groups who had latterly made it a home with retail and cafe outlets providing a popular base to socialise in.

This all changed on one evening when incendiary devices were placed at both ends of the arcade in a deliberate act of arson. No one has ever been charged for the crime to this day. Attempts to redevelop the land and the surrounding area continue, despite protests that this architectural jewel should be restored rather demolished.
