Description

Queen Elizabeth II arrived in Northern Ireland for a two day visit in July 1966, primarily to officially open the new bridge named in her honour across the River Lagan in Belfast. However, she also carried out many other public functions and can be seen here on the first day attending a large military gathering at the Balmoral Showgrounds. At one point she can be seen with Prince Philip driving in an open top car around those standing in formation on the grass.

The military Review was held to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of the Somme which had claimed the lives of so many servicemen from Ireland during the First World War. 1500 veterans from the conflict joined with youth services to attend the military and religious event in the presence of the Queen.
