Construction continues at Shannon Airport as it expands. The plans include housing and industrial buildings. The expansion came as Shannon extended its main runway to be able to accommodate larger planes.
Charlie Witherspoon investigates the history of the airport. Its growth was spurred on by the decision in 1947 to the world’s first customs-free airport. Brendan O’Regan, whose idea was to set-up a duty-free shop, speaks to Charlie about his work at the airport.
The scheme is a huge success and Vincent Toibin tells Charlie about the full range of services offered by the airport, which includes tax concessions for businesses within the duty-free airport. An American businessman confirms the advantages of being in Shannon.
