Description

Footage of work being carried out at the Toome Eel Fisheries operation in the village of Toome (aka Toomebridge) on the shores of Lough Neagh in Co Antrim. Fishermen pull the nets of eels in and are seen depositing them in wooden boxes which are sealed for transport as live eels. Eel fishing was a major industry at the time and Lough Neagh eels considered a delicacy across the United Kingdom leading to the rights to fish Lough Neagh becoming one of the biggest and most expensive legal cases in Northern Ireland courts during the early 1960s.
