All over Ireland, women are collecting stories, songs and the culture of their place, often unheard and under-represented in the portrayals of heritage work.
The Women in Heritage project is a community filmmaking initiative celebrating local heritage and the women who work to protect and share it. We launch this project with a look at the work of Úna Walsh in South Armagh. Úna is a local historian who works within her community to keep the stories of the Ring of Gullion area alive.
This film was made over the course of August and September 2025 with a group of women who wanted to learn more about heritage and filmmaking. Thanks to partnerships with the University of Ulster, the Rural Community Network and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, the Digital Film Archive was able to fund this project, supply archive film and now to store the resulting documentary.
This trailer shows a glimpse of Úna’s work and the newly-found filmmaking skills of the local community.
