A film by Ben Jones highlighting the concerning rate of teen suicide in Ballynahinch.
Described as a "good place to grow up" as it has a community which young people can appreciate, what it lacks, is any real facilities for young people. This lack of purpose compounds with low self-esteem and self worth, says Pat McGreevy. Another issue is that though there are few recreational activities for the youth of the town, it does have thirteen pubs which means many of the teens drink underage.
However, Marisine Stansfield (Presbyterian Minister), finds that in most cases, drugs and alcohol don't play a big part in the matter, but that many of the youth she has worked with lack involvement in a faith community, or have troubled inter-personal relationships. This is where charities like 'The Edge', have really benefitted people's lives, as it gives young people a place to go and somewhere they can socialise free of pressure.
The programme speaks to various teens who have found their mental health suffering in the past and how they have moved past it.
