Description

The USS Betelgeuse arrived at Belfast Docks. Betelgeuse had been a US cargo ship during WWII but in 1960, she was was modified to carry Polaris missiles and components in support of the Fleet Ballistic Missile program. This modification changed the mission of Betelgeuse from a fleet resupply ship to a link in the Polaris program.

Notes

Polaris missiles were nuclear-powered and played a major role in the Cold War between the USA and the USSR. The Betelgeuse and other ships were used to carry the missiles and supplies for Polaris submarines.
