This programme is an important piece of Northern Irish television
history as it was made to welcome viewers in the west of the country to Ulster
Television. Between 1959 and early 1963 it was only viewers in the eastern
parts of Northern Ireland who could tune into UTV. However, a new transmitter
in Strabane ensured that those in the west could also be entertained by the
fledgling channel.
A special night of programming was prepared to appeal
directly to viewers in Derry/Londonderry and the west and this welcome from the
studio included words from the Northern Ireland Officer of the Independent Television
Authority. It must have been considered a very solemn occasion because the
studio then hands over to representatives of the four main religious
denominations in Northern Ireland who were each granted generous amounts of
time to address the viewers.
