Description

Vikings find themselves in deep water as they storm Kilkeel's stoney beach. Will an army clad in tinfoil and tableclothes be a match for the 'Scandinavian' invaders?

Idyllic scenes of traditional dancing are shattered as local swordsmen prepare to defend their stony shore from the Viking invaders. Revel in the charming details of this 'historical' re-enactment as a local cast take centre stage decked in tinfoil sparkling with sunlight. A hilarious battle is fought with gusto as Vikings abandon their long boats and plunge into the freezing County Down waters. But who will get the girl and who will end up on the funeral pyre?

This film was digitised as part of the BFI's Unlocking Film Heritage project.

Notes

These rushes are amongst a wealth of footage that was generated by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board. This government department had their own staff who documented the region through stills and moving images and the films they created capture various facets of life in Northern Ireland. The department was particularly busy in the mid-1950s to late 1960s, creating films that aimed to sell Northern Ireland as a holiday destination. This material captures Northern Ireland at an intriguing time, post-World War Two and pre-Troubles.
