Description

Amazing film of voting in Bunbeg and Tory Island in Donegal. The Dáil Éireann elections are taking place and every vote counts. The polling station in Bunbeg (which might be a pub) is busy. Gardaí escort a ballot box on a boat out to Tory Island.

Notes

Bunbeg and Tory Island are in the Gaeltacht area Gweedore in western Donegal. Tory is the most remote inhabited island in Ireland. Although the population is in decline, about 120 people still live there.

The name Tory comes from the Irish ‘Oileán Thoraí’ or, historically, ‘Oileán Thúr Rí’. The word Tory comes from the Middle Irish word ‘Tóraidhe’, which means ‘bandit.’ It was adapted to describe all who were supposed to have sympathy with the Catholic James II during the time the British Glorious Revolution in 1688 and is now used as an alternative name for the Conservative Party in Britain.
