Description

Belfast Film Festival presents Vox Populi: The Voice of the People

In 2022 Rose Baker made a selection from Ulster Television’s vox pops to create an installation of archive film within the much-loved and little accessed Bank Of Ireland building on Royal Avenue. The screenings took the form of building tours of 14 people at a time, allowing visitors to move around the space, reflect on the archive testimonies and view the city-centre from a unique vantage point.

As visitors ascended the floors of this unique space, they heard and saw discussions on local football and Sunday opening for pubs, filmed close to the city centre. As times changed through the decade, so too did the subjects on the news agenda. Miniskirts appeared on the streets of Belfast and men’s hair length was up for debate. As the Global Sixties progressed there was a cultural shift, and ultimately the footage depicted the growing unrest reflected in people’s experiences shared on camera.

This edit was the firstl film shown on the 2nd floor of the building.

This project was supported by the BFI Film Audience Network with National Lottery Funding as part of Film Feels: CURIOUS, part of Changing Times: the UK-wide Screen Heritage programme managed by Film Hub North.
