Description

Yallaa, meaning “let’s go” in Arabic, is a social enterprise based in Northern Ireland. This award-winning organisation celebrates Arab cultural heritage in Northern Ireland and fosters cultural understanding through workshops, events, community initiatives, and the delicious food served at its café, located at 2 Royal Avenue in Belfast City Centre.

This short video highlights one of the many workshops the group offers. Two American visitors share their impressions following a session focused on Arabic calligraphy, or khatt.

With its profound cultural significance, Arabic calligraphy is a highly respected art form in the Arabic world and serves as a cornerstone of Islamic art and architecture. Originally developed as a communication tool, calligraphy evolved into a revered cultural tradition, with various regions creating unique script styles and conventions such as Kufic, Naskh, and Diwani.
