Archie Reid’s Work May Fair Well in Ballyclare

Of other days around me.” So runs Thomas Moore’s poem, which inspired the title of Florence Mary McDowell’s story of childhood in Ballyclare, brought to life on film by the award-winning local filmmaker Archie Reid. A gentle reflection on life in Ballyclare, the film was made on the goodwill of the local community, including a supporting cast of 30 children drawn from the area, who were all surprisingly willing to sit through on-camera sermons on their sinfulness! Elsewhere, Reid’s soft focus gives way to an archer view of Northern Ireland, with films like Sodom and Begorrah offering side-splitting satire of stereotypes of Irish life. The Hungry Grass might make Americans think twice about tracing their Irish ancestry, and The Seventh Angel gives us pause to reflect on our divine fate – is the end really nigh?! Part of NI Screen’s Digital Film Archive, all these and more will be shown this Saturday the 19th at the Ballyclare Picture House Community Cinema, part of the much-beloved Ballyclare May Fair. Whether you want to remember Ballyclare as it was, celebrate Reid’s creative spirit, or just enjoy Saturday night at the movies, make your way down to Ballyclare Town Hall this Saturday at 7.30 pm. The event will also feature music, poetry, and talks with those who knew and worked with Archie. Admission is free and all are welcome. Be there or Ballybegorrah!
