I'm sailing away

As anyone who follows our work here at the Digital Film Archive knows, we have a special place in our heart for the coast of Northern Ireland. Last year we worked with Malojian as part of BFI's Britain on Film: Coast and Sea project to put together a music video that doubled as a living letter about coastal life as we knew it and as we know it: the funfairs of seaside towns; the dubious health and safety practices of small seafaring vessels; the appetite for life that only salt air gives. The new footage for the video was filmed on one of NI's most iconic islands: Rathlin. The only inhabited island off the coast of Northern Ireland, Rathlin sits six miles from Ballycastle. Over the next two weeks, folk from Ballycastle, Rathlin, and the wider Causeway Coast and Glens area come together for a celebration centred around Rathlin Sound, the body of water that lies between the island and the mainland. With music, merriment, and mayhem, the Rathlin Sound Maritime Festival offers a chance to celebrate all that is special about NI's coastal heritage and to make new memories while marking the old. As our extensive collection of archival footage shows, summer on the North Coast seems to last forever...even if the safari park didn't!
