The Road to Mexico - Rescheduled
Date: 10/08/2026 19:00
Rescheduled 7pm August 10th @ Odeon, Belfast
After the heroics at the 1982 World Cup and Gerry Armstrong's famous goal against Spain, no one expected Northern Ireland to repeat the feat. Especially with a squad starting to age and no longer playing for the top clubs. Could they possibly do it again? When the campaign began with a disappointing defeat in the first match it seemed not.
What followed next, though, was one of the most memorable adventures in Northern Ireland's history. With qualification becoming ever less likely, they went into the crunch final two games against Romania and England with a forty-year-old goalkeeper who had already retired from first team football. History beckoned.
This film follows the ups and downs of qualifying with both match footage and behind the scenes access from the UTV and BBCNI archives.
The documentary is part of this year's Docs Ireland programme and will be shown at 7pm on August 10th at the Odeon in Belfast. Following the screening there will be a Q&A with two Northern Ireland legends - Pat Jennings and Gerry Armstrong.
