Women’s History Month

A couple of days before International Women’s Day, Northern Ireland Screen Archive joins to celebrate Women’s History Month highlighting the contributions of women to contemporary society and events in history.

Amelia Earhart, an American pilot, was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic solo but also the first person to traverse the Atlantic and Pacific. She played a significant part in the formation of an organization for female pilots, was a member of the National Woman’s Party, and an early supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment in the US.

Here’s a short amateur film of Amelia Earhart and her plane in Gallagher's field in Co. Londonderry surrounded by a crowd of excited onlookers. The landing in Derry gave rise to the famous Earhart anecdote, apparently a farm hand asked, 'Have you flown far?' to which she replied, 'From America'.
