The summer of 1982 at the World Cup in Spain is perhaps Northern Ireland’s most famous and fondly remembered sporting achievement. At that point, Northern Ireland was the smallest nation ever to have qualified for the World Cup and – just as they previously had in 1958 – they stunned the world by reaching the quarter-finals. Along the way, they created memories to endure for a lifetime as they upset the odds to beat the host nation with Gerry Armstrong scoring the most iconic goal in the nation’s history.

During the tournament, Ulster Television sent a camera crew fronted by Jackie Fullerton to capture behind-the-scenes footage from the Northern Irish training camp. Unparalleled access was granted by the team to the crew, above and beyond what other nations allowed, and the result was twenty cans of film documenting the players training, relaxing, being interviewed and following their progress through the tournament. As well as the thoughts of manager Billy Bingham, there were also interviews with the many fans who travelled to support the team and the opinions of the people back home in the streets and pubs of Belfast.

And then the cans of film were unseen for forty years. But that was not the end of the story.

Digitised in 2022, Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive team edited this footage into a feature length documentary which was screened during the 2022 World Cup as a Belfast Film Festival special event. It was then used extensively in outreach events with supporters for several years afterwards and screened as a finalist at the prestigious Paladino d’Oro Sports Film Festival in Sicily.

For those familiar with the goals and the on-field drama, the film shows the events from another angle as we see behind the curtain to the manager, players, officials and supporters plotting their date with destiny. Yer Men in Spain brings back the memories of a glorious summer in which Northern Ireland won hearts and minds around the world.
