Description

Brian O'Nolan, better known as Flann O'Brien, wrote An Béal Bocht (or The Poor Mouth) as his only full novel in Irish. Written under his pseudonym Myles na gCopaleen, the work is a hugely influential and loving parody of Irish literary tropes, particularly those genres that explored life in Ireland's Gaeltacht region – familiar to any Irish schoolchild. It follows the misadventures of Bónapart Ó Cúnasa as he traverses the landscape of his rugged home, encountering criminals, animals and swarms of Gaeilgeoirí blow-ins from the big smoke of Dublin.

This characterful adaptation was made by filmmaker Tom Collins and broadcast on Christmas Day 2017 on TG4, featuring the voice talents of Owen McDonnell and Donncha Crowley. The artwork was created by John McCloskey, who previously created a graphic novel adaptation of the novel. The film was produced by Pearse Moore and Tom Collins and animated by John McCloskey through their Nerve Centre-based production company, Raw Nerve Productions.
