Description

This short clip comes from the documentary  Peig presented by Sinéad Ní Uallacháin. The film explores the life, legacy, and cultural reception of Blasket Island storyteller Peig Sayers. Long derided by generations of Irish students due to her memoir’s inclusion in the Leaving Certificate curriculum until 1995, this programme re-examines Peig’s contribution to Irish oral tradition. Incorporating archive recordings from the National Folklore Collection, interviews with admirers and critics, and a new poem by Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, the film questions how Peig’s image was shaped by state ideoloperception. In this excerpt, Ní Uallacháin interviews Máire Ní Dhálaigh and they discuss the misconceptions of students studying Peig Sayers’ memoirs. The stunning Great Blasket Island, which Peig called home, can be seen in the background.
