Description

William McGookin interviews the Minister of Commerce, Brian Faulkner, on the formation of an Economic Council. Mr Faulkner is hopeful that bringing in successful businessmen will provoke thought on developing the 64,000 jobs the Wilson Report set out as a target for Northern Ireland.

All of this economic planning was part of PM Terence O’Neill’s plan to improve Northern Ireland’s prosperity.

Notes

Brian Faulkner was Minister of Commerce at this time. He would go on to become Prime Minister of Northern Ireland.

Professor Thomas Wilson was a Belfast-born economist and professor at Glasgow University. He was Economic Consultant to the Northern Ireland government 1964-1965 and his report produced proposed measures to improve the infrastructure and provide more training, so as to attract industry to the province. It brought some prosperity, but hopes were dashed when the troubles erupted at the end of the 1960s.
