Description

In this episode of Check it Out, Jacqui Berkeley and Eamonn Holmes explore a range of topics including, how to make the latest fashions in your own home, an eyesore waste site and how Barbie will fare versus a newcomer in the doll market.

Jane Martin demonstrates how to make a a dress from a pattern, using only your standard sewing machine, something she concedes "can be a wee bit tricky," but, if you follow the pattern it should turn out fine.

Reporting in Ballygrot, beside a prime location in North Down, is Darragh MacIntyre, who finds out what the local residents of Helen's Bay think of Ignatius Geddis' waste disposal yard. Despite the upset, a spokesperson for Ignatius tells Darragh that, "a waste disposal centre is not similar to a garden centre, it's not pretty to look at. But it has to exist".

In an effort to combat unrealistic beauty standards, a new doll - Happy To Be Me - has been released and is selling well in America. With the product set to come to UK stores soon, Check It Out asks how the newcomer will match-up against the famous Barbie doll.  A playgroup of girls is asked to choose between the two. The results are analysed by Patricia Donnelly (Clinical Psychologist) who states that both dolls are essentially "fantasy figures for the children" and, so, neither would make much impact in terms of their self confidence. However, if she were to buy one, she would opt for the 'Happy To Be Me' doll.

Concluding the programme is a special announcement from Eammon... Presenter Andrea Catherwood has got engaged - "to the hunky Patrick!'
