Description

Brian Black explores the issue of conservation in Northern Ireland, with interviews from experts involved in the field, followed by a studio discussion with four guests.

The first topic is the drainage of wetlands, the resulting removal of natural vegetation having a negative impact on the wildlife in the rivers' catchment area. Dr. Karl Patridge [RSPB] notes that even mammals such as otters are being affected, due to fish stocks being low. Other concerns include the destruction of old bridges and buildings along the riverbanks, a loss of "our cultural heritage".

John Philips [Department of the Environment] states that any new environmental schemes would be looked at in depth, with all outcomes measured. However, Dinah Browne [RSPB] argues that it will take an extensive amount of time for the natural habitat to return to what it once was and that the economic cost is huge.

Rowan McGhie [Farmers Union], conveys the farmers' perspective on land conservation, with Dr. Arthur Mitchell [Mournes Advisory Council] stating possible ways conservationists and farmers could work together to mutually beneficial ends.

Other subjects incllude; over-fishing in Strangford Lough and raised boglands being exploited for commercial purposes.

Notes

Counterpoint is Ulster Television's landmark current affair series, which was also broadcast to a national audience on Channel4. Series' editor, Derek Murray described Counterpoint as addressing a "wide range of social concerns which affect every family in Ulster".
