Description

Presenter Brian Black showcases the finalists for 'Opportunity Ulster' a design competition held at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum (sponsored by Shorts Belfast).

Previous winner Brian Spencer achieved a lucrative contract after creating a sellotape dispenser and future hopefuls are all interviewed ahead of the big reveal.

Jamie Delargy gives some quick facts before Jim Myers explains the uses of his roof protection structure. Judge, Dr Vera Furness judge, explains what impressed her about the design. Next, Alan Prichard gives some insight into his 'Fetal Distress Detector' which has other applications, such as for veterinary purposes; Prof. Fabian Monds, one of the judges, chats about the commercial promise of the product.

Charles Rai-Brown is impressed with the programme created by John Frazer, which has the potential to help young designers learn how to use modern industrial tools.

A new and improved lorry structure is also featured, invented by Fred Wilson this design is been given the seal of approval by Gordon Mackie. Brendan Gormley, Tony Reid and Alan Crimason designs are also introduced with testimonials given by Gordon Blair, Brian McClelland and Gordon Mackie.


Notes

Counterpoint is Ulster Television's landmark current affair series, which was also broadcast to a national audience on Channel4. Series' editor, Derek Murray described Counterpoint as addressing a "wide range of social concerns which affect every family in Ulster".
