Description

The group with the most long-winded name of any group of the 60s pop scene came to Northern Ireland in early 1967, riding high on a wave of success. Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich had notched up four Top Ten UK hits during 1966 and can be seen here arriving at Aldergrove airport before appearing in two concerts in one night in the North West – at the Embassy Ballroom in Derry and at the Strand in Portstewart.

Following them was UTV reporter Leslie Dawes, who seems slightly baffled with his assignment admitting that he doesn’t really understand the appeal of pop music. At the Embassy gig we see them play their first big hit Hold Tight, while they can be heard performing their Number 2 chart success, Save Me, in Portstewart. In between we get to hear from their fans outside the gigs and see the boys dashing from the venues into waiting cars. When it’s all over for the night Leslie meets up with them for an interview about their hectic life on the road. It all adds up to a perfect slice of the teenage mania surrounding pop stars in the 1960s.
