David Dunseith reports from Dublin in 1971 for the UTV current affairs series, Deadline Friday. This edition focussed on the issue of contraception in the Republic of Ireland and the thorny issue of church involvement in the running of the state. This particular issue of civil liberties versus religious opinion involved forthright opinion expressed by church leaders, which many saw as undue influence in the sphere of politics and personal choice.

Interviewed by Dunseith is Mary Robinson, a future President of the Republic of Ireland. At this point, she was a Senator who was one of three tabling an amendment to the existing laws to try to allow the sale of contraception - and to amend the censorship laws banning even the circulation of books on family planning. Also interviewed is Mary Kenny, Women's Editor of the Irish Press, who had challenged a letter by the Archbishop of Dublin, and Dan O'Connor, a Labour member of the Dail. Seantor Thomas Mullins of Fianna Fail and Dr Noel Browne are also interviewed as well as one anonymous woman who supports the church stance. Another woman is filmed with her back to the camera to protect her identity as she details how she has found ways around the ban.

Unfortunately, the programme no longer exists in its entirety, but these interviews and pieces to camera represent the majority of what would have been broadcast in 1971.
