Description

Edward Carson Jr, the son of Lord Edward Carson departs Aldergrove airport for London, following his decision not to stand for election in North Belfast. He complains about the treatment he has received at the hands of the Irish press following the announcement of his intention to run in the election.

Mr Carson disagrees with the stand taking by PM Terence O’Neill, viewing it as weak. He had been going to contest the election in North Belfast where established MP Stratton Mills would be standing, against Labour candidate David Overend but withdrew at the last minute. It had been feared his nomination would have caused a split in the Unionist vote in the constituency.

Notes

The Hon. Edward Carson was the youngest child of Lord Edward Carson's five children (born when his father was 66), and he was the only child of his father's second wife Lucy Frewen.

Carson was an MP for the Isle of Thanet from 1945, when aged 25, until he resigned for health reasons in 1953. He died in March 1987 at the age of 67.
