Description

Gordon Burns speaks with Peter Weil about his remarkable career in journalism and broadcasting. Born in Belfast and educated at Campbell College, Burns began his professional life as a reporter for the Belfast Telegraph. His early promise in sports journalism led to national exposure on BBC Radio’s Sports Report, where he worked alongside figures such as Angus McKay.

In 1967, Burns returned to Northern Ireland as Sports Editor and Programme Producer for Ulster Television (UTV), covering key moments in Northern Irish current affairs and political history. He reflects on his reporting during the early years of the Troubles, including interviews with political figures like Gerry Fitt, Ian Paisley, John Hume and William Craig. The conversation touches on landmark events such as the Sunningdale Agreement, the peace process, and the 1994 IRA ceasefire, offering a unique first-hand account of the evolving political landscape.

Burns also discusses his move to Granada Television, where he became a familiar face as the presenter of Granada Reports, World in Action and the long-running quiz show The Krypton Factor. He shares insights into the changing face of broadcasting in the 1960s and beyond, his time working in London and the intersections of serious journalism with light entertainment, including his appearances on Shooting Stars and admiration for the comedian, Peter Kay.

The interview offers a rich and personal perspective on the history of journalism, sport and television in the UK and Ireland, with candid reflections on public figures such as Gerry Adams, Bernadette Devlin, Ted Heath and Margaret Thatcher.
