Description

Maryfield, on the Belfast-to-Bangor road in Northern Ireland, was the home of the Anglo-Irish Secretariat set up under the terms of the Anglo-Irish Agreement. This report for Good Evening Ulster shows a mass protest by thousands of local workers, mainly from the Harland and Wolff shipyard and the Shorts aircraft factory, who march to the gates of the complex as part of a continuing series of Unionist protests against the Agreement.

The protest turned violent when those at the front pushed their way through the gates to be met with ranks of RUC officers. The resulting exchange left many protestors and officers injured. Ian Paisley attempted to address the crowd in an appeal for calm and when the protest eventually dispersed and began the march back to Belfast, Here, Ulster Unionist MP Harold McCusker is interviewed about what happened. A plane dragging a banner declaring 'Ulster Says No' is also seen.
