Description

Crowds gather at Murlough Bay for the memorial service for Roger Casement. It was Casement's request that he be buried at this location but following his execution for treason, the British government refused and when Casement’s remains were finally repatriated in 1965, he was buried in the Republican plot in Glasnevin Cemetery. This annual commemoration still takes place.

Notes

Roger Casement (1 September 1864 – 3 August 1916), known as Sir Roger Casement CMG between 1911 and 1916, was a diplomat and Irish nationalist. He worked for the British Foreign Office as a diplomat and later became a humanitarian activist, poet and Easter Rising leader. He was executed in Pentonville Prison in 1916 after organising a shipment of German arms to Ireland at the time of the Easter Rising.
