Description

Film of a number of memorial services that took place after the assassination of President John F Kennedy in November 1963. Dignitaries and members of the public including the US Consul General, Mr Murphy arrive at St Mary’s Chapel in Belfast, while others including Brian Faulkner and Sir Terence O’Neill attend St Ann’s Cathedral. 

Notes

John F Kennedy: President Kennedy (1917-1963) was assassinated in Dallas in November 1963. He was US President for three years and had close connections to Ireland. He visited Dublin in 1962 and his death was greeted with shock and sorrow all over Ireland.  

  

US Consulate General, Belfast: The Consulate General in Belfast is one of the oldest in the world having been founded by President George Washington in 1796 (per USA Consulate website). At the time of President Kennedy’s death it was located in Queen Street in Belfast. It is now in Stranmillis, Belfast.
