Description

Footage of the official opening of the Northern Ireland War Memorial building. Built on a site in Waring Street in Belfast which had been destroyed by bombs during the Second World War, the building was the result of a long campaign to erect such a monument. It served a triple purpose as a war memorial, accommodation for a number of service-related organisations and as a symbol of kinship with the US.

The Queen Mother was greeted outside by Lord Glentoran, Lieutenant of the County of the City of Belfast and met other dignitaries such as former Prime Minister Lord Brookeborough inside. The Governor of Northern Ireland, Lord Wakehurst, introduced the formalities before the Queen Mother declared the building open during her speech.
