Description

Sports journalist Alex Toner on Derry City’s match against Anderlecht in the European Cup. The first leg was held in Brussels and Alex previews that match. The second leg was mired in controversy as the IFA refused to allow the game to take place at the Brandywell. In protest Derry City would forfeit the game. They would hardly have gone further anyway, losing the first leg 9-0.

Notes

Derry City's membership of the Irish Football Asssocation would come to an end in 1972 after the IFA refused to allow game to be played at the Brandywell ground in Derry. In 1985, Derry City FC applied to join the FAI, becoming the first Northern Irish team to do so. It remains in this league now.
