Description

The legendary Belfast Telegraph sports correspondent Malcolm Brodie reports from Coleraine interviewing its citizens on the impressive form of the town’s football team. The team at this stage was under the leadership of Bertie Peacock as player manager. Peacock had been a noted player for Celtic in Scotland and had excelled as Northern Ireland reached the quarter finals of the World Cup in Sweden in 1958. As well as managing Coleraine he was also manager of Northern Ireland at this time and was steering the north coast club so successfully that its fans were now dreaming of winning the league.

As it turned out, the club would finish behind Glentoran by a single point. However, this was to be no flash in the pan and Peacock would lead Coleraine to their first major honour, the Irish Cup of 1965, before guiding them to multiple trophies in a golden period during the late 60s and early 70s with the City Cup, the Gold Cup and the Ulster Cup - before finally clinching the side’s only league title in 1974.
