Description

The Newington Carers group meet weekly to be part of various social projects, and this film documents one of those meetings where the group travels back in time through their shared memories. Alongside contemporary footage and photographs of the Waterworks in North Belfast, the film features discussions with the Newington Day Centre Carers Group.

The members reflect on sunnier memories of yesteryear, as for many of the group, the Waterworks was their nearest green space. They discuss the different places they would have played games like marbles, including tennis courts and empty spaces where houses had been destroyed during the second World War. They emphasise the changes in the area and how bustling activities like the Park Run have activated the space today. They also talk about different areas in the park such as the waterfall and the ponds, and how the ongoing maintenance has increased safety in the Waterworks.

Notes

The Newington Carers Project is a support group for carers of people with dementia, who attend the Newington Day Centre in North Belfast on a weekly basis. It provides a range of care services and offers community events, tea dances and fun days when funding is available. The Centre has a Family Carers’ Support Service which arranges activities, therapies, health checks and social events.
