This is a Good Evening Ulster report from a joint
Unionist press conference from the steps of the main stairway at Stormont
parliament buildings, held on the day of the signing of the Anglo-Irish
Agreement between the governments of the United Kingdom and the Republic of
Ireland. The Ulster Unionist and DUP leaders, James Molyneaux and Ian Paisley,
both read out statements outlining their complete opposition to the Agreement,
as well as setting out the first steps of their withdrawal from co-operation in
local and national government, while also demanding a referendum.
Over the course of the next year, the two rival parties would continue to provide a fairly unified programme of opposition and there is a first mention here of the threat of all Unionist MPs at Westminster resigning to force by-elections to provide a de facto referendum if one isn't called.
