Description

The raging issue of the day for Belfast youth in 1964 seemed to be bands versus showbands. UTV took to the streets to ask some twentysomethings their thoughts. In the main, it seems to have been a male/female divide for band/showbands respectively with young men preferring the sound of 1960s groups whereas the women seemed to prefer the dancehall sounds of the showbands playing cover versions.

One young man is derisory in his descritpion of the showband sound as "typical Ulster bump-a-long music - it's horrible". Meanwhile, one young lady sets out her stall for showbands apparently on numerical grounds alone by declaring, "I prefer a larger number of people playing in a band". Quantity over quality if all else fails!
