Join us on 28 October 6-8pm at Ulster University (Magee Campus) to celebrate the legacy of Terence McDonald.

Terence McDonald is one of Northern Ireland’s most important amateur filmmakers. He produced a range of films from slapstick to social documentary, many focusing on his beloved Derry. 

Northern Ireland Screen hosts the Terence McDonald collection within the Digital Film Archive where his work sits alongside broadcast, commercial films and other local filmmakers.

In Spring 2026, Ulster University’s BSc Cinematic Arts students joined forces with Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive to celebrate the remarkable film legacy of Terence McDonald. Under the guidance of Dr Laura Aguiar and Brónagh McAtasney, first-year students produced original films inspired by McDonald’s rich archive, while second-year students curated a special screening programme of his work.

The event features screenings of both the student works and McDonald’s films, discussions about his creative legacy and a special introduction by Derry-based lecturer and filmmaker Jim Curran.
